KUR-World – a done deal for Kuranda?

KUR-World development is proposed for the Historically Zoned 12 Rural Titles 626ha (1545 acres) Barnwell Road in Kuranda. READ IN BRIEF: STORY SO FAR

The KUR-World proposed project area is located centrally in the Kuranda township in the Myola Valley.  The project area straddles sensitive habitat for endangered Wet Tropics species and development will severely impact on the Kuranda Envirolink Corridor – the narrow neck or “pinch point” – the forest bridge that joins the North and South Word Heritage Wet Tropics forests.  The land clearing done in preparation for the proposed development has already damaged the Kuranda Envirolink Corridor.  The illegal dam cut in December 2015 has already destroyed one seasonal breeding habitat for endangered species Kuranda Tree Frog.

The common misconceptions are:

  1. “Done deal” – it’s already too late.
  2. “Pie in the sky” – it’s never going to happen.
  3. Neither is true.  EIS is now open for public submissions.

Our community doesn’t have much time to act.

We are a small tight-knit community of people 2000+ – with a wider supportive regional community – including Koah and Speewah.

Information is key.  Stay alert Kuranda and watch this space…

Campaigning for Proper Planning for Kuranda Region
in line with recognised ecological values

The BARNWELL 12 RURAL TITLES are currently zoned RURAL.  We are asking for no change on the current land use, ie. the property must stay zoned rural and a separate town plan cannot be developed for this land.

We also believe the bottom 6 rural titles should be preserved – no development at all.  This remnant vegetation is corridor country for the endangered cassowary with outstanding ecological values.

The Myola Valley in our state and local planning instruments:

WHAT IS KUR-WORLD?

  • 323 x 600m2 high-density  residential
  • 50 x 600m2 – 2000m2 high-density residential
  • 500 students on University Campus
  • 18 hole golf course
  • 270 room hotel
  • 200 double-storey resort accommodation
  • 300 bed education centre
  • 60 bed health spa
  • shopping centre, amphitheatre, day spa, convention centre with capacity for 500 people
  • adventure park

KUR-World is being marketed as an ‘eco’-tourism resort with high-density residential blocks proposed for the Myola Valley – central passage of land between Barnwell Rd. in the north and Warril Dve.  The owner of the land is a “Macau businessman” Ken Lee who purchased a large rural family owned property in January 2014.

KUR-WORLD COMMUNITY REFERENCE GROUP (CRG)

We have serious doubts about the representation this cohort actually offers our Kuranda community. The members have been cherry-picked by KUR-World – with very little representation of people who actually live and/ or have businesses in Kuranda.  There is also a high proportion of KUR-World engaged contractors.

  1. Letter to Coordinator General, concerns about Community Reference Group for KUR-World ‘Eco’ Resort
  2. KUR-WORLD Style Community Consultation
  3. Provisions for local government representation

EIS PROCESS

  1. Environmental Impact Statement Terms of Reference Released October 2016, see link below
  2. Studies and documentation can continue for up to a year
  3. Timing is fluid, depending on the developer’s capacity to provide the final submission
