Dear Council and cced CEO,
I write as an individual in support of the letters sent by the various environmental and resident groups in Kuranda region about two applications for reconfiguration of lots to be considered under the 2004 plan ( items 7 & 8) and about an application for approval to clear rainforest, ostensibly for grazing ( item 5).
For many years, large sections of the Kuranda community have campaigned to protect the Kuramnda/ Myola area and its environmental values. It makes no sense for council to make it easier for land to be subdivided against the wishes of the local people. It is also disappointing that no one has been allowed to speak about these proposals at the council meeting and for discussion to be facilitated about these complex issues.
( Having the council meeting in the morning of a weekday, when most ratepayers work, also does not aid public engagement at meetings. Many councils meet in the evenings so that the public can come along. Perhaps Mareeba Shire council could do so, maybe even occasionally in Kuranda.)
At the very least, these decisions need to be delayed until councillors have had time to meet with and listen to the concerns of ratepayers. If councillors are informed of these matters, I am sure they will reject the applications.
Regards,
Sarah Isaacs
