DESCRIBE THE ISSUE*
The Draft EIS states the following: “The KUR-World development objectives are as follows: - Showcasing the cultural, environmental and historical connectivity of the site to the Atherton Tablelands and Wet Tropics World Heritage Area; through appropriate protection, interpretation and presentation to visitors. - Conservation and strengthening of the site’s intrinsic environmental values for protected species (especially the Kuranda Tree Frog and Southern Cassowary) through the provision of buffers and corridors, as well as active conservation management.” ---- Project design requires additional tree clearing for the following KUR-World facilities: > Residential Villas > Golf Course > 5 Star Eco-resort > Health and Wellbeing Retreat > Rainforest Education Centre and Adventure Park Primary access route to the site will clear 22,000 square metres of high quality, known cassowary habitat and cross three sensitive cassowary rainforest creeks. The areas scheduled to be cleared are a mixture of maturing rainforest regrowth some 28+ and 76+ years old, as discerned from historical aerial images. These areas are marked as ‘Potential core habitat for Southern Cassowary’ in the KUR-World EIS maps. Cassowary ‘potential scat’ has been found on the northern area of the site where intensive development is planned.

Or if you agree with the solution that is proposed, then fill out your name/address details below and click submit.* The developer has already cleared and scraped back up to 100 hectares since purchase in 2014. This clearing was undertaken illegally, without a permit on high risk land, which may have changed the overall outcome for the EIS footprint if the proponent had followed proper process. Development design must be dramatically scaled down to remove the need for further deforestation of the land, including the primary access route to the site. DNRME classifies ‘High value regrowth vegetation’ as 15+ years old. The areas scheduled to be cleared must be maintained for cassowary. Only 20-25% of former cassowary habitat remains and much of it is still under pressure.
